Honoring the Authors:Garment & Citizen editor and publisher Jerry Sullivan (center-left) congratulates Vera Bilbrew (far left), Kathy Hadizadeh Mehr (center-right) and John Hodaro (far right) for their winning entries in the “Write a Letter Home” contest. Bilbrew and Hodaro submitted their entries—letters telling relatives in other countries or states about how life is different in California—to the Garment & Citizen. Hadizadeh Mehr submitted her entry to Iranian.com. A large number of newspapers, television and radio stations and Internet-based publications participated in the contest through New California Media, a statewide association of ethnic media outlets. The California Council for the Humanities also sponsored the event, which provided translators for letters written in languages other than English, a panel of judges, and $1,000 awards for 12 winning entries. The local winners were honored at an April 6 event at the Los Angeles Central Library at 5th Street and Grand. They stayed on hand for a fascinating discussion with David Mas Masumoto, a Central Valley farmer and author of “Epitaph for a Peach” and other books. Masumoto’s talk was part of the Aloud lecture series, which features discussions with prominent authors, historians and commentators. The events are usually free, but reservations are recommended.
