Not everyone can expect extra work hours these days, with all the economic uncertainty in the air. But Sylvia Yanez can count on a few this week. The native of Jalisco, Mexico, has worked the counter at Philippe the Original at Alameda and Ord streets for seven years, and she’s scheduled to be on duty when the place celebrates its 100th birthday on October 6. That will help her paycheck for the week, but Yanez says she also looks forward to the big day for other reasons. She says she likes her job every day because it gives her a chance to meet so many different people. How many? It’s estimated that Philippe’s serves up 3,000 to 4,000 sandwiches a day, so that’s plenty for Yanez and her colleagues. They can expect some extra visits on October 6, too, as customers line up to get a bargain, grab a bite, and say “Happy Birthday” to a local landmark (see related caption; Dot Dot Dish item, home page).
