The Garment & Citizen hails all current and past members of the U.S. military who will be honored this Veterans Day on November 11. We also remind everyone that it’s always a day for veterans at the Go for Broke Monument in Little Tokyo. The monument recalls the many Japanese/Americans who served with distinction in World War II, even after officials of the U.S. government rounded up tens of thousands of other Japanese/Americans and put them in internment camps. The roundups were based on suspicions about their loyalty in the battle against Japan, and the federal government has since apologized for the actions. The Go for Broke Monument helps explain why the internment camps marked a sorry point in U.S. history. The monument is located north of 1st Street at Central Avenue, in a plaza near the Japanese American National Museum. Visitors are welcome (See related Community Calendar; Guest Viewpoint; Letter to the Editor, home page).
