Working Their Way Back Home: Karina Contreras and Lourdes Perez hope to go back where they started, a journey each has set as a goal as they study to become teachers. The two are junior-year students at Mount Saint Mary’s College, which operates campuses in the Figueroa Corridor south of Downtown and on the Westside. Contreras and Perez were recently named winners of the 2008 Rockefeller Brothers Fund Fellowships for Aspiring Teachers of Color, an honor that goes to a maximum of 25 students nationwide each year. The fellowships provide $22,100 over five years to help honorees pay for their undergraduate and graduate studies. The honorees make a commitment to teaching in public schools for three years after graduation. That’s just fine with Contreras, who grew up in the Downtown area and says she hopes to one day return as a teacher to Betty Plasencia Elementary School in the Westlake district just west of the city’s center, where she attended classes as a youngster. The same goes for Perez, who grew up in San Fernando and hopes to return to teach in her hometown.
